About Rob Stalbow

What is osteopathy

Osteopathy is a safe and effective manual therapy. Osteopathy works on the principle that all parts of the body operate as an integrated whole.  A thorough training in this interrelatedness allows the osteopath to trace pain and dysfunction in one area, such as a knee, to its often remote cause. Particular attention is placed on the way in which the shape, alignment and use of your structure interacts with how effectively it can function.

When you see your osteopath, you will learn where you have restrictions in your body. When given the chance, the body possesses all the resources to heal itself, but it requires that its pathways are free to flow and communicate.  Any restrictions to the vessels moving blood, the nerves transmitting impulses, or the ducts secreting hormones will prevent the system from finding balance. The role of the osteopath is to facilitate the openness of these channels, via your connective structure, so that your movement, digestion, breathing and vitality can reach their optimum function.

What is osteopathic treatment like

Manual techniques are performed with respect for you and the state of your tissues, and are carried out in a careful, gentle and measured manner. They include massage for the release of tight muscles, joint articulation and manipulation to improve the range and quality of movement, and gentle abdominal techniques to help the position and gliding of the organs.

What do I wear?

It is best to wear shorts and a singlet/gym top, but there will be a spare set of shorts in the clinic should you forget. At times, in order to allow the osteopath to observe and work on different areas, it may be necessary to undress to underwear, in which case towels will be used to ensure your comfort and modesty are maintained.
